Values Development and You
We all have our own personal set of morals and values as well as beliefs. Values development is important for each one of us and continues to change throughout our lives. It helps us to know where we are going in life and who we are. No one is born with inbuilt values and ethics but we develop them through influences in our lives.
A good start is to determine what you want to accomplish in your life. Consider whether you value friendship more than family or is it your career that is your focus. Values development in the areas you consider important to you should be encouraged. Most people though would value family and friends but the order may be different or even change in your life. Also, church and spirituality is also important to many of us and can be our main focus too.
Religion and morals play a big roll in value development. You may wish to explore many religions before you find the one that you connect with. Having faith based beliefs, although not essential, can give us guidelines to follow to help us keep our values in check and deciding what is right and wrong.
Family values you develop during your early years impact on you as an adult. We are also greatly influenced by our peers during adolescence and the values and morals our parents instilled in us early on gives us particularly a good base to live our lives as upright citizens. Having an ethical attitude to all we do ensures we are living our life in a fair and honest way.
Have you considered how other people view you? If you asked them what they think your values are what do you think they would tell you? If you don’t think that the answer would be what you want to hear then maybe you need to work on your values development so you show the values to others that you want to represent.
